About INQUEST

INQUEST is a charity that provides a free advice service to bereaved people on contentious deaths and their investigation with a particular focus on deaths in custody. Casework also informs our research, parliamentary, campaigning and policy work.

What people say about INQUEST

I only found out about your organisation quite by chance. For two years [my friend] has been left to his own devices and has clearly been out of his depth. Would it not be possible to devise a system whereby interested parties would automatically be notified by the coroner of your existence? — Family friend of a young man who died in prison

Information pack for bereaved people

INQUEST’s information pack provides information on inquest system in an easy to use format. Designed for bereaved people, their friends, staff in advice and information centres and those working with bereaved people in a supportive role, it offers a comprehensive guide to the current system. It is also excellent for lawyers needing accessible background information.

Since its launch in August 2004, the complete information pack has been downloaded over 45,000 times (up to the end of December 2010).

We updated the pack in light of changes in the way deaths are investigated and the Coroners & Justice Act 2009 and have published a fully-revised second edition (with a new name The Inquest Handbook).

We value your feedback on how useful the first edition of the Information Pack was to you and would appreciate you filling in our feedback form:

Please give us your feedback about using the Information Pack using the form below (all boxes must be completed):
