INQUEST is a small charity with a staff team of eight providing free advice to people bereaved by a death in custody and detention and is entirely independent of government. We are reliant on donations and grants, without which we could not carry on our vital work for truth, justice and accountability.

Stats Watch

19.05.16 Our casework team has opened 214 cases so far in 2016.

18.05.16 There have been 130 deaths in prison so far this year, including 7 women, 9 young people aged 18-24, 1 homicide and 40 self-inflicted deaths.

22.05.16 There have been 13 deaths involving the police in England & Wales so far this year including 2 fatal shootings.

11.05.16 there have been 5 self-inflicted deaths of women in prison this year to date; as many as in the whole of 2015.

20.02.16 One death in immigration detention has been reported this year; there were 2 such deaths last year.

11.02.16 There were 256 deaths in prison in England & Wales in 2015, including 17 young people aged 18-24; 1 child aged 16; 88 self-inflicted deaths; and 8 homicides.

11.02.16 8 women died in prison in 2015; there were 2 self-inflicted deaths of transgender prisoners held in all-male prisons.
