INQUEST monitors the number of deaths in custody independently where the information is available. This is part of our casework. There is a greater availability of information on the numbers of people who die while in custody or at the hands of state officials. This has been particularly important in highlighting the disproportionate number of black deaths in custody following the use of force. Many issues remain undisclosed regarding the circumstances surrounding each death.

Although there is now more transparency in police and prison deaths, the same cannot be said for deaths in psychiatric detention and so it is impossible to monitor any emerging trends. Currently there is no central database of deaths in psychiatric custody and therefore no way of monitoring these deaths independently when they do occur .
