BAME deaths in prison
Below is a breakdown of black and minority ethnic deaths in prison by year since 1990.
|BAME Deaths in prison (England & Wales) 1990-date|
Source: INQUEST casework and monitoring.
Note: Detailed Home Office statistics pre-1996 are not available, hence the low number of non-self-inflicted deaths INQUEST is aware of in those years.
These figures do not include deaths in immigration removal centres (IRCs) and immigration detention centres (IDCs), but do include deaths of people held in prisons as immigration detainees.

‘At the time of the tragedy, I had no idea of what to do or who to turn to. By luck, I found yourselves and contacted you, the rest as we say is history. On behalf of [my brother's] family, friends and myself I would just like to thank you so much for your professional support and advice during that difficult period and without that help, I do not think we would be where we are today.’
