INQUEST’s Director comments on latest prison death figures
28 January 2016
Commenting as the Ministry of Justice quarterly Safer custody figures are published INQUEST's Director Deborah Coles said:
"The depressing reality of prison life is reflected in these appalling figures. Suicide, homicide and self harm is an endemic problem that can only be addressed by a dramatic reduction in prison numbers. Every day INQUEST hears harrowing stories from the families of those who have died. Time and again deaths occur that reveal failures in treatment and care and a lack of learning from previous deaths. Without fundamental change the deaths will continue."
‘Although it is fair to say I was given adequate opportunity to express my views the final verdict was not the one I had hoped for. We were all devastated to think that [our brother] had died in such tragic circumstances and no one had been made accountable.’
