INQUEST’s Director comments on latest prison death figures
28 January 2016
Commenting as the Ministry of Justice quarterly Safer custody figures are published INQUEST's Director Deborah Coles said:
"The depressing reality of prison life is reflected in these appalling figures. Suicide, homicide and self harm is an endemic problem that can only be addressed by a dramatic reduction in prison numbers. Every day INQUEST hears harrowing stories from the families of those who have died. Time and again deaths occur that reveal failures in treatment and care and a lack of learning from previous deaths. Without fundamental change the deaths will continue."
‘We would like to thank INQUEST and our case worker for their help and support. INQUEST is a real lifeline for people who have lost loved ones and they have helped us practically and emotionally. They are worthy of much more funding than they receive to carry on their excellent work in increasing understanding in this area and in the way they support bereaved families.’
