Harris Review into deaths of 18 - 24 year olds in prison to hear from those working with vulnerable young people - seminar 2nd October

26 September 2014

On 6 February 2014, the Justice Secretary announced an independent review into self-inflicted deaths in National Offender Management Service custody of 18-24 year olds. Lord Toby Harris, Chair of the Independent Advisory Panel on Deaths in Custody (IAP), is leading this review supported by IAP members including INQUEST's co-director Deborah Coles.

Toby Harris has described this review as a 'once in a generation opportunity' to improve the care of some of the most vulnerable people in custody.

The review is a direct response to the policy, legal and campaign work that INQUEST has been conducting around the call for an independent examination of the deaths of children and young people for many years.

The Review would like to invite representatives from groups or organisations that work within local communities to support the needs of vulnerable people, young adults, ex-prisoners and also who provide through the gate support in prisons to attend a seminar on 2nd October. They are keen to hear views on key topics that impact on the subject matter of the Review. The day will be structured around the themes of mental health and support networks.

The purpose of the day is to:
Hear evidence on relevant issues and experiences that will help inform the overall evidence base for the Harris Review
Engage the knowledge of local experts who work closely with young adults on a range of issues
Explore key themes relevant to these groups and this cohort, including mental health, support networks, particular issues relevant to BAME young adults, and through the gate work.
Enable smaller, community-based stakeholder groups, who may not have a national voice, to have their say.

The day will be structured so that representatives will work in small groups, alongside members of the Harris Review panel, to explore key issues and feed back to the panel.
