INQUEST is a small charity with a staff team of eight providing free advice to people bereaved by a death in custody and detention and is entirely independent of government. We are reliant on donations and grants, without which we could not carry on our vital work for truth, justice and accountability.

25.05.17 Our casework team has opened 208 cases to date in 2017.

17.05.17 So far in 2017 there have been 103 deaths in prison, including 26 self-inflicted deaths and 2 women.

27.04.17 There have been 2 self-inflicted deaths in immigration detention and one self-inflicted death of an immigration detainee in prison so far in 2017.

14.04.17 there have been 14 deaths involving the police in England & Wales to date in 2017, including 2 fatal shootings.

16.01.17 There were 345 deaths in prison in 2016, including 22 women, 16 young people aged 18-24, 3 homicides and 113 self-inflicted deaths.

31.12.16 There were 45 deaths involving the police in England & Wales in 2016, including 4 fatal shootings.

31.12.16 Three deaths in immigration detention were reported in 2016, including one homicide.

31.12.16 There were 12 self-inflicted deaths of women in prison in 2016; more than twice the number in 2015.
