INQUEST is a small charity with a staff team of eight providing free advice to people bereaved by a death in custody and detention and is entirely independent of government. We are reliant on donations and grants, without which we could not carry on our vital work for truth, justice and accountability.

Stats Watch

01.12.16 Our casework team has opened 485 cases to date in 2016.

30.11.16 There have been 314 deaths in prison so far this year, including 21 women, 15 young people aged 18-24, 3 homicides and 105 self-inflicted deaths.

29.11.16 There have been 39 deaths involving the police in England & Wales so far this year, including 4 fatal shootings.

17.11.16 There have been 10 self-inflicted deaths of women in prison this year to date; twice the number in the whole of 2015.

20.02.16 One death in immigration detention has been reported in 2016.
